Slade Schuster, creator of The Slade Short Course, is a Minnesota native. He attended Amherst College, majoring in English and minoring in Russian. After graduation, he attended UC Berkeley in the Slavic Languages Department before enlisting in the U.S. Army to attend the Army Language School in Monterey, CA, where he completed the Russian course. He spent a year on the Black Sea in Sinope, Turkey, eavesdropping on Khrushchev's Russia for the Army Security Agency. When his enlistment ended, he took an MAT degree in English at The Johns Hopkins University and then taught English for 37 years at Shattuck-St. Mary's School in Minnesota. Dissatisfied with grammar texts available there, he wrote The Slade Short Course grammar text book which was published by the Independent School Press in 1978. Upon retirement in 2003, he composed 25 CD-ROM grammar games to accompany, practice, and test the text lessons.
In 2017 with the help of his former student, Chad Clites, a software developer, he converted both the text and games to the internet APPlication presented here.
